Runaway Donkey Hooligans

I mentioned in the last short post the donkeys had gotten loose and came perilously close to a high speed road.  Of course it was mostly my fault.

I had come home, opened the gate on the driveway, drove through, and parked the car by the horse trailer as we were going to unload some hay to put in the barn.  Well guess what.  I forgot to close the gate.  I must have opened the donkey gate and there we go.  Instead of wandering the grass toward the house, they immediately started down the driveway toward the road.

This is not footage from that day (clearly) but gives you a view of the gates and the driveway escape route.

Rick and I tried to follow them calmly and I tried to entice them with the promise of cookies (they are well acquainted with the word).  But nothin' doin'.  On they run.

So now they're on our dirt road and instead of heading toward grass in a neighbor's yard, they choose to barrel  toward the 50 mph road where idiots treat it as a 2-lane expressway, just beyond the car in the photo below.

Gabby stopped short, about where the cranes are and started grazing.  Rick and I split up - I veered toward Gabs and he went further on toward Sugar and Spice.  I was sure at this point they were goners.  After much cajoling  I got Gabby to our driveway and finally beyond the gate, then went to join Rick.  That was a bit trickier.  He had rounded them up closer to home but they were having a bit too much fun.  Closer to our driveway they came and then a truck comes down the road.  I'm in the middle of the road and am putting my hand out to STOP.  Didn't pay any attention so I did it again forcefully and am yelling "stop!!!"  He did, but no offer of help and at the first chance drove off.

Getting donkeys closer and another damn truck comes from the opposite direction.  That kind gentleman stopped, blocked the road with his truck and got out to help.  Thank you sir!!  Moments later we get Sugar and Spice headed down our drive.

It took a couple of hours for my adrenaline to stop surging.  And guess what day it was -- Mother's Day.  Wouldn't you know.

The angels.
